I’d like to talk about a film I saw today. The film was called Come Play. Stop me if you’ve heard this premise before: kid gets bullied, kid’s mom is protective, imaginary monster wants bullied kid. Well stop your assumptions there. Oliver, the boy in question, is nonverbal Autistic. Oliver uses a speech pad on his phone to “talk”. One scene shows Oliver in a regular education class with his aide. One boy says “How come Oliver gets to use his phone during class and you took mine away?” So after class, one of the school boys “invites” Oliver to hang out with him and his group of friends. Of course this is a ruse and Oliver is bullied and has his phone thrown out. Oh, I forgot to mention the monster. The monster “lives” in technology devices. So devices like cell phones, iPads, computers, tablets, et cetera. The monster is named Larry. Before you laugh, know this: Larry thrives on loners and is the creature in an ebook. The only way to get rid of Larry is to finish the book. Nobody believes poor Oliver. Oliver is tormented by Larry throughout the movie. Horror aside, the film is excellent! It delicately tackles the challenges of nonverbal Autism. That and the challenges of school age kids in general. Ok, look. I am verbal Autistic. But I can absolutely appreciate Oliver’s feelings of isolation and loneliness. Oliver’s parents kind of remind me a little of my own. Like Oliver, my mom is also protective. She looks out for me. Much like Oliver’s dad, mine is there but we don’t always see eye-to-eye. So as for a final score, I am going to give it a 9/10. Do I recommend the movie? For a horror film, this movie is actually really touching and moving. I came close to crying during one or two scenes. So yeah I recommend it. Let me know what you think. Do you want to see this movie? Thanks for reading!
