The clip I’d like to talk about today is from last year, but I still consider it relevant. The video I’d like to discuss has to do with the Autistic muppet Julia. In the episode, Julia’s hair is long and Abby Cadaby and Elmo try to talk her into going to a hairdresser for a trim. Alan role plays as a hairdresser to Julia and Elmo plays pretend as a hairdresser to Abby. Julia is hesitant about getting a haircut. But after Alan, Elmo and Abby walk Julia through the process of getting a haircut, Julia agrees. It does not show Julia getting a haircut but just photos. I am glad Sesame Street tackled this subject. I know obviously this is not a blanket topic, but I know quite a few people on the Spectrum who loathe getting their hair cut, or even being touched. The fact Sesame Street tackled this touchy subject—no pun intended—is respectable to me. Julia is lower functioning but I think it could apply to all walks of life on the Spectrum. I myself am somewhat weird about being touched. I totally understand where Julia is coming from. I know when I need a haircut, but it doesn’t change the fact I hate my hair being messed with. So what do you think of Sesame Street covering this issue? Let me know in the comments and thanks for reading!
