MOVIE APPREHENSION AND EXCITEMENT

I am looking forward to seeing a movie this weekend but am also maybe a little nervous about it. The movie in question is A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. I am a kid at heart, I’ve said that for a while. So now we have a movie about the late, great Mister Rogers. The one thing I am excited for is the person who is playing Mister Rogers. Tom Hanks is playing Fred Rogers in the movie. I love Tom Hanks. I have loved him from movies like Toy Story when I was a kid and movies like Green Mile and Cast Away when I was older. Tom Hanks is just an all-around great actor. I mean, he is the voice of Woody from Toy Story 1-4. So yeah…I have a little bit of a soft spot for Tom Hanks.
And then there’s Mister Rogers himself. The gentle TV giant and personality, Fred Rogers. I adored Mister Rogers as a kid. So has my opinion changed now that I am a 29-year-old adult? Yeah, and for the better. I might go off on a tangent here but bear with me. Unlike that annoying, singing purple monstrosity of a dinosaur, Barney, in my opinion, Mister Rogers got better the older I got. As an adult, I understand just how innovative Mr. Rogers actually was. Sure, the puppets were primitive, but they tackled some very real and legitimate issues. Some examples are divorce, race equality, and even death.
But then there was the lighter side of things. It is thanks to Mister Rogers I know how crayons are made. And let’s not forget the fact that Fred Rogers basically single-handedly saved public television. So yeah…Mister Rogers was a great guy and totally innovative. So it totally makes perfect sense they’d make a movie based on him.
So why the major concern on my end if I am looking forward to the movie so much? Well it’s because Mister Rogers was kind of against “phonies” and “actors”. So now we have a legit Hollywood movie with a professional Hollywood actor playing a person who was vehemently against all that. I am a little apprehensive that they might over-stylize or over-dramatize Mister Rogers, for lack of better terms. I hope to Christ that isn’t the case, but again…Hollywood.
Having said that, I have been looking forward to this movie since it was in its infancy “rumor” stages in early 2018. So I have been stoked for this movie for well over a year. Plus I am seeing it with my mom. She and I are VERY close and both share similar views on Mister Rogers. So that makes it all the more special for me. I don’t normally cry or tear up during movies unless it is pertinent to me in some way, but I expect to get a serious case of the “feels” and nostalgia overload during A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
So are you looking forward to this movie? Let me know in the comments and as always, thanks for reading!

  1. I am looking forward to the movie since I loved MR. Rogers Neighborhood! I think it will bring back the feelings of the days when I was a kid and had no worries.
