This past weekend, from Friday November 8, 2019-Saturday November 9, 2019, I attended the annual Maryland Irish Festival. I had so much fun at the festival! I am a little more than half Irish and identify with that heritage, so I was in my element! There were a lot of great bands this year! Among these bands were ShamRogues, Dublin 5, Screaming Orphans, Kilmaine Saints, and Seamus Kennedy. Seamus Kennedy is not a “band” but rather one man and a guitar. Seamus is really funny and a great guy to talk to! The Screaming Orphans were probably one of, if not, my favorite bands this weekend. They are four sisters from Donegal, Ireland. I have seen them once before and thought they were good. This time, I was blown away! The singer and drummer for the Screaming Orphans, Joan Diver, had a broken rib playing but she rocked out regardless. In her words, “I’ve had my drugs. I am ok.”. Their last song was a cover of Happy Together. It was SOOOOOO GOOD!
One downside, though. I got onstage with Dublin 5 on Friday night. “How is that a downside?” you ask? “That sounds awesome!” And yes, it was. But when I got off the stage, I jumped down and I think I landed the wrong way. My ankle is killing me at this point! But “I’ve had my drugs. I am ok.” Haha.
Seamus Kennedy was really good this time around! There were members of the armed forces at the Irish Festival and he jokingly made fun of them with his “tribute” to the US Armed Forces. That was hysterical!
Also there was alcohol…naturally. Guinness, Guinness Blonde, and Over the Moon Milk Stout. The Stout was actually really good! It was kind of expensive, though. It was $6 per drink! Plus I had to eat. So it was a little expensive. But it was worth it. As an example of how “Irish” the festival was, when I got to the festival Saturday morning around 11:30, I decided to get a coffee. They asked if I wanted Bailey’s in my coffee. Not thinking anything of it, I said yes. Um…HELLO?! BAILEY’S IS IRISH ALCOHOLIC CREAMER! Alcohol! At 11:30 in the morning! Well at least it was good coffee.
And then there were the dogs. I am an animal lover so I immediately fell in love with the dogs. They had Irish Wolfhounds, Whippets, Greyhounds, and my personal favorite: the Newfoundland. WOW! These dogs are MASSIVE! But they are gentle giants. These dogs were amazing.
So in closing, I had a great time at the Maryland Irish Festival! For me, it is an annual tradition to go every November. Thanks for reading!
