This is a little controversial to discuss. Some people believe in the paranormal and others think it’s all smoke and mirrors. Me? I am conflicted on the subject. I believe in an afterlife, but I think some things are just made up to scare the shit out of people.
I do think people who have passed on and that we care about never really leave us. My grandfathers for example. I lost my grandfather on my mom’s side when I was seven. Truth be told, I don’t remember much of him. “Pop” as I called him, died of lung cancer and smoking. What I do remember about Pop is that he would always get me great toys at Christmas. When I had my original open heart surgery at 4 months old, Pop bought me a Glo-Worm. I am a little embarrassed to admit this, but I still sleep with that on my bed as a memento.
It’s really weird. I had a bizarre experience a few Easters ago when we lived in Baltimore City. My mom, sister and I had just gotten home from the cemetery. I was in my room—alone—thinking about Pop. I felt this pressure on my chest, like someone was hugging me. I looked around upstairs and I was alone. That freaked me out, but it was also comforting.
We lost my grandfather on my dad’s side last March. What’s so weird and ironic about Da—what the family called him (Celtic for “dad”)—was that he died the day before St. Patrick’s Day in 2018. I remember how I found out he has passed. I was coming out of surgery. I had this feeling that something was wrong. I asked my mom what was going on with Da—he had been in hospice at Gilchrist—and my mom’s face said it all.
I think our loved ones do stay with us in one way or another. They never really die as long as we remember them. They live on in our minds and in our hearts. I think they have subtle ways of showing us they are still with us. I know I have experienced weird stuff I can’t explain; so has my mom. My girlfriend Allie has had some instances, too. So at least I know I am not going insane…yet.
So do you believe in ghosts, spirits and/or the paranormal? Let me know in the comments below and thanks for reading!
