Once again I would like to refer to Fred Rogers as a source of inspiration. Today’s inspirational quote is maybe a little long, but I think it is impactful nonetheless. The quote says, “What’s been important in my understanding of myself and others is the fact that each of us is so much more than any one thing. A sick child is much more than his or her sickness. A person with a disability is much, much more than a handicap. A pediatrician is more than a medical doctor. You’re much more than your job description or your age or your income or your output.”
A little wordy, I know, but it still means a lot to me hearing that. I, as a person with a disability, am a Hell of a lot more than my “handicap”. I have said it before and I’ll gladly say it again. I have a disability. It is a big part of who I am, sure, but I am NOT going to let it define me as a person.
You can overcome adversity. I know because I speak from experience. I have gone from relative unknown to a punching bag and scapegoat in school to where I am today. I have worked my way up the ladder when it comes to adversity and disabilities.
Do not let what you have define what and who you are as a person. I actually sort of flaunt the fact I have a “handicap” or “disability”. It has served me well in life. There are people out there who will accept you for you and not what you have. I am tempted to exclude family from that statement. They love you regardless…at least they are supposed to. Look at friends for example. They could care less what you have. All they care about is the person you are.
You are more than your diagnosis. You are a person not a diagnosis or ailment. So what do you think of these words and quote by the late, great Mister Rogers? Let me know what you think and as always, thanks for reading!

  1. You and me are so much more then our disabilities and medical issues. We have both cloned the ladder and are in better spots now.
