I’d like to talk about a movie I saw earlier today called Peanut Butter Falcon. I didn’t know anything at all about the film going in, which might be a good thing. I hadn’t seen any ads or trailers or reviews for it. So I went in totally blind. The only reason I saw it was because there was nothing else of interest to me playing.

“So Tom what did you think of the movie?” I LOVED IT!!!!!! Shia LaBeouf played a fisherman on the run from his old bosses. He gets even with them by burning $12,000 worth of gear. Dakota Johnson plays a caretaker at a retirement home named  Eleanor. They are both great in the film but the movie would, in my opinion, not be as good if it weren’t for the lead actor…not LaBeouf.

Zack Gottsagen plays a 22 year old runaway with Downs Syndrome. The character, funnily enough named Zack, runs away from a retirement home where Dakota Johnson works. So Zack meets Shia LaBeouf’s character, Tyler. Tyler first finds Zack annoying. But after learning about Zack’s diagnosis he goes softer on him. They form a bond.

So why is the movie called Peanut Butter Falcon? Well Zack loves pro wrestling. His favorite wrestler is Saltwater Redneck, played by Thomas Hayden-Church. Tyler tells Zack he should pick his own name. After smothering his face with peanut butter, Zack chooses the name “Falcon”. So that’s where the name comes in.

One of the more powerful scenes in the movie, in my opinion, is a conversation between Tyler and Zack. Zack tells Tyler he wants to be the bad guy in wrestling. After Tyler asks why, Zack says something along the lines of “My family doesn’t want me. I have no friends. I’m a retard.” Tyler responds “Just because your family left you doesn’t make you a bad guy. You didn’t do anything wrong.” Zack asks Tyler if he is a good guy or a bad guy. Tyler asks Zack’s opinion. Zack says “I think you are a very good guy.”

As with any movie review I am not giving away the ending. It is such a great movie! I have Autism and not Downs Syndrome. But I think it can tie in with developmental disabilities in general. The actor who played Zack did it flawlessly! After doing some research I found out Zack Gottsagen isn’t “acting”. He legitimately has Downs Syndrome. So to the writers and director of the film: THANK YOU!

So overall what do I think? It was the best movie I have seen in quite some time. I think it is because it was so easy to relate to on a personal “disabled” level. So for its overall score out of 10, I am going to give it a 10. It is not the best movie I have EVER seen but it is quickly becoming a classic to me. Seriously just go see this movie. It’s amazing. I’m just going to leave it at that. See this fantastic movie ASAP. Thanks for reading!
