Yesterday, May 17, 2019 I went to my favorite local radio station 89.9 WTMD for a show. Every month or so WTMD has free concerts in their studio from 12-1pm. This is one of my favorite things to do! I mean where else can you go during your lunch break and see great bands for free? You can’t!
This time it was a band from Ireland called Jealous of the Birds. Truth be told I went in to the show kind of blind. I had never heard of them up until less than a week before I went to see them so I had no idea what to expect. Let me just say…WOW! This band is great! I really don’t know how to categorize them. Like the lead singer, Naomi Hamilton, looks like she would be more hard rock or maybe even closer to punk almost but they play a mix between mainstream rock and acoustic mellow rock. A perfect example of this is their songs Purple Octopus and Goji Berry Sunset. The latter is probably my favorite song by them. Just because for one the refrain is whistling and lyrics. Plus it is just a great chill song. It’s the kind of song I’d listen to to unwind and relax.
Another song that is kind of an interesting mix between mainstream rock and acoustic mellow rock is Clementina. I think the reason I liked Jealous of the Birds so much is because of the variety and it is just good music. That’s all it is. Just good music. Now I realize this band is not going to be everyone’s favorite band or genre of music but knowing the kind of person I am I like them. Actually one of the people I went to the show with was not that impressed. He said something along the lines of “It was too bubble gum pop and generic.” But on the other hand the other person I was with said she was surprised that she really liked it. So to me that is interesting.
Music in general is funny like that. Like I don’t like rap, R&B or hip hop. But other people swear by that genre. And it has nothing to do with race. I know people of all races and denominations that like the same kind of music yet others loathe it. But going back to the show…I met Naomi after the show and got her autograph and a photo with her. She was super cool and just really awesome to talk to.
Having sung all these praises about Jealous of the Birds I will say they are not my favorite Live Lunch show I have seen. I think that honor goes to a band from Germany I really like called Haerts. But for a person who did not know hardly anything going in, yeah this band is great! So good I actually bought one of their cds.
So in closing if you are looking for a new artist to check out or just like what you read in this post, by all means check out Jealous of the Birds. Again do not assume you will like them based off my post alone. I urge you to go to YouTube, listen to a few songs, and form your own opinion. So that’s it from me. Thanks for reading!
