DUMBO MOVIE REVIEW

I saw the Tim Burton remake of the classic Disney movie, DUMBO, last night (March 30, 2019). I had some reservations about seeing it for a few reasons. First was the obvious: It’s a remake. I have seen remakes of some other Disney movies that didn’t really do much for me. Alice in Wonderland is one example of that. However, Disney and Tim Burton have exceeded my expectations with Dumbo. It stayed true to its roots, albeit darker and more maybe a little more dramatic than the original. But hey, that’s Tim Burton’s style. Unlike the original Disney movie, the big giveaway that Dumbo, or Baby Jumbo (or Jumbo Jr.) in the movies, can fly is early in the remake as opposed to the very end of the animated movie. And Dumbo 2019 is almost twice as long as its original predecessor. It’s nearly 2 hours long, as opposed to the original 63 minute film. Now I mentioned some reservations or doubts going in. I was excited to see it, but I had read some not-so-flattering reviews for it. I think Rotten Tomatoes gave it something like a 58% rating or something. It’s a shame because the movie, to me, was AMAZING! Oh my God. I walked out of that movie blown away! Maybe it’s because I am a huge fan of Tim Burton, or the fact that I didn’t know what to expect or a combination of both. I don’t know but I loved every minute of it! It was an emotional tear-jerker movie, too. You feel bad for Dumbo and how he is treated, but like any good Disney movie, it has a happy ending. I actually think its not-so-good reviews could be a good thing. I think people buy into “official” movie reviews from Ebert or Rotten Tomatoes so it’s gonna deter some people from seeing it, which makes it easier for people who really like the movie like me to see it without worrying about it selling out. So would I recommend Dumbo? Yes, but be prepared for an emotional movie. Plus it has a great cast. Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton…it’s just a great cast! Plus the kids in the movie are adorable, as is baby Dumbo! For its final score, I am giving it a 4.5/5. It is probably among my favorite Disney remakes, if not my favorite! I do think this could be a movie for everyone. Take your significant other as a date night; families with kids; I saw it with my mom, Aunt, grandmother, and godparents. Seriously, this is a movie everyone can enjoy! I loved it and cannot recommend it enough! As always, thanks for reading and let me know if you have seen Dumbo and what you thought of it. Thanks for reading!
