So I know it is cliché that when we think of Autism, we think of teenagers and younger. But, inevitably, those kids and teens with Autism grow up and become adults. So what then? We have funding set in place for people with Autism, sure, but that usually ends at age 18 or 21 in some cases. And it is bullshit that the funding for adults on the Autism Spectrum like myself get from the Government…roughly half of that is rent since I still live at home with my parents. Look, I know paying rent is part of “adulting” and growing up and gaining more independence, but I think if you live at home with your parents…and do your fair share of work…living at home should be free. I feel that once kids on the Spectrum turn 18, they just kind of drop off the radar. And that’s unfortunate. Adults with Autism need just as much attention, if not sometimes more, that their younger counterparts. My logic? Kids screw up all the time. It’s natural and almost expected for kids to make mistakes. BUT if you make similar screw ups or mistakes as an adult…you’d probably wind up in jail. Here’s the sad thing…if you are an adult and have lower-functioning Autism, you probably do not know what you are doing is wrong. I have read some examples of people with Autism being arrested due to a misunderstanding. Like inappropriate touching. Sadly, this goes both ways. People with Autism are statistically assaulted more frequently than their non-Autistic counterparts. This disgusts me. People think because that someone can’t talk or adequately communicate is almost an invitation. “Oh, they won’t do anything. They can’t say no.” People with Autism have feelings and emotions just like everybody else in the world. Maybe the people who assault them think “They don’t know what’s going on” or “Oh…they’re retarded. They won’t say anything.” First off, it’s naïve to think that. And secondly, nobody deserves to go through that emotional and physical abuse and pain. And if you such a fucked up piece of shit to think it’s ok or acceptable to touch someone inappropriately because you think they can’t do anything…Hell has a special place for you, pal. Right next to Satan’s throne itself. But going back to my original point. I think there should be a sort of “mental screening test” for people who commit crimes and claim to be on the Spectrum. I think some people use Autism as an excuse for getting out of jail or legal trouble. And that’s wrong. Than in and of itself should be a crime. So maybe some kind of test is in order. Anyway, I want to hear from you. What do you think adults with Autism should deserve or should be entitled to? Thanks for reading!
