SPECIAL CITY

I am a Baltimore native. There is a lot of history in Baltimore…the Star Spangled Banner, our National Anthem, was written here. Fort McHenry is a national monument. Fells Point has some of the most haunted pubs in America, if you are into macabre history, like I am. Apart from that, there is nothing particularly “special” about Baltimore…except the fact that, to me, it is home. Yes, Baltimore has had its fair share of violence…actually, as of my writing this, I think we are number 1 or 2 in the country for murder…but that does nothing to detract from my sense of hometown pride. For all the shit Baltimore catches, I actually find it very charming. I think there’s a reason they call Baltimore “Charm City”. I hate to bring up old wounds, but a few years ago, we made the national news because of the Freddie Gray riots. That left a scourge on our city’s already somewhat damaged reputation, but I think we are slowly recovering from that. I think Baltimore has its good aspects and bad aspects, just like any other major city in America. I lived in Baltimore City for 25 years, and barring one incident, nothing ever happened to me. I was comfortable living in Baltimore City. I am happy where I am now in Baltimore County, but I grew up in the city, and as they say, “You can take the boy out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the boy”. I still go to Baltimore City all the time for concerts and events…at night! I think for as much of a shitty reputation Baltimore natives get, we actually kind of look out for each other when the going gets tough. I am upset that whenever Baltimore is shown on the news, they only show the “bad” side of my beloved city. There are so many great things they never show on TV. People are almost apprehensive to come to Baltimore just because of its reputation. That’s sad. I say give it a chance and judge based on your experience. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I love my city and would not change it for anything! That’s it from me. I want to know if you think your city is special and if so, why. Thanks!

  1. I agree with you completely hon! I love our city so much! Baltimore will always be the best city! It will always be home! I do agree that we do look out for each other when times get tough. The city also seems to rally each February during the radiothon for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center which for me is awesome to see. Our city is special! Baltimore I love you my city!
