I was raised Catholic. I attended private Catholic schools up until I graduated High School. In the past 10 years, I have recently started questioning my views on Catholicism, and maybe religion in general. If any of you are easily offended, now might be a good time to stop reading. This is going to be a controversial post. I think religion is a “necessary evil”. Hey…I told you my view was controversial. I think religion is important to many different people for a lot of many different reasons. BUT I also think religion might just be tearing the Earth apart. For example, Muslims think their God is the most important thing about their lives, but so do Catholics. All religions seem to think differently than the others and, quite honestly, tend to view other religions as subversive or inferior. Muslims think their religion is the best and, if they are “take-the-Quran-to-the-letter” believers, are actually willing to kill to prove a point. Catholics often view Jews as below them. Hell, look at the Crusades. The other name for them? The “Holy Wars”. And what’s holier than religion? Now look…I am not bashing religion. I understand it is a really important aspect of peoples’ lives. I do believe in a Higher Power but I am questioning whether there is an all-powerful entity that watches everything you do and judges you depending on whether you are “good” or “bad”. Growing up, I had another name for this person: Santa Claus. Now am I saying God and Santa Claus are one and the same? No. But they do seem to have a lot in common. They both have you under constant surveillance, they’re both depicted as being old and having long, flowing beards, and if you’re bad, they both have something in store for you involving fire. Santa has coal and God has the power to send you to Hell. I like to think my dearly departed…my grandfathers, my sister’s boyfriend Zack, my Bearded Dragon, my cat Chessie, and my old dog Buster, are in Heaven…or at least a better place. But I am one of those people that, until I experience it firsthand, I just can’t be 100% sure it exists or if it’s just a figment of someone’s imagination thousands of years ago designed to ease the constant fear of dying. I hope to God Heaven exists, but since I have never “officially” died, I am not positive. I know my grandfather, who I called Da, would whoop my butt for thinking like this, but I am entitled to my own opinion. My grandfather was the most religious person I have ever known, so this would probably be sacrilegious to him. (Sorry, Da). So before I offend too many people too much, I’ll just stop here. I want to hear other people of any religion’s view on this topic. As always, thanks for reading!
