I saw the Bradley Cooper version of A STAR IS BORN a few days ago. Now keep in mind, I have not seen the original movie with Barbara Streisand. So I will not be comparing the two in this post. Right off the bat, I have to say this movie was not really I movie I was eager to see. I am not a Lady Gaga fan. HOWEVER I am a fan of Bradley Cooper. So I was torn between “Do I want to see this movie?” and “It looks like a dumb movie”. So to my amazement, when I saw the movie this past Sunday…I LOVED IT! I was blown away by how great this movie is! Yes, it is a long movie (about 2 hours, 20 minutes) but I did not care. I was totally in the moment with every scene! I always thought Lady Gaga was, well, gaga. Not to mention eccentric and a fashion ripoff of Elton John and Freddie Mercury. But I was surprised to see how ordinary she looked in this movie. She looked like an everyday, off-the-street person. I am sort of happy she went with the “Plain Jane” look. She played the part well.
OK. Enough about Lady Gaga. Bradley Cooper did a phenomenal job playing a drug addicted, depressed musician. It takes a lot for me to cry during a movie, but the final scene with Bradley Cooper damn near succeeded. It was so sad and heart-wrenching that I was actually tearing up. I am not gonna give the end of the movie away, but let me just say this: It is powerful, heartfelt and emotional.
I have never seen another movie like this. The closest thing I can compare it to is Walk the Line. Now, granted, we knew how that movie turns out. Johnny Cash and June Carter, played by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, get married and live happily ever after…or at least until they passed. I know A Star is Born is an entirely different movie with different people, but to me, it kinda seemed to have the same kind of storyline.
Maybe it’s because this movie wasn’t on my radar that I was blown away by the movie. Like I said, I have not seen the original but now I want to watch it. The soundtrack was amazing; the acting was very realistic and believable. Like, I cannot emphasize enough what a great movie this is. This is the kind of movie I feel you have to see more than once because it is just that good! Plus I think the more you watch it, the more you will notice. I have only seen this movie once and I am already rearing to see it again! (Hint, hint Allie.)
I am not a professional movie critic. I am not Robert Ebert, but I am entitled to my own amateur moviegoer opinion. For me, this movie had everything. The acting, the music, the great storyline, the emotional factor…just the whole package. I would easily give it a 9.5/10. Actually, it might even be deserving of a perfect 10. But I do not want to hype this movie up so much in this post that if you go see it, you are left disappointed. Like, “Well Tom Whalen said…” No. I almost feel bad and guilty about raving about this movie so much because I do not want anyone to be let down or disappointed if they see the movie on account of my post.
So in closing, go see the movie A Star is Born and form your own opinion. I can’t tell you what to think of a movie. This is just my opinion. But I suggest you see it even just once just to see it and judge it for yourselves.
So that concludes my blog review of A Star is Born. Thanks for reading!
