DIFFERENT BUT NOT AUTISTIC?

OK. I do not want this title to confuse anyone. I understand we are all “different”. But different does not necessarily mean “Autistic” and vice-versa. Girls on the Spectrum are better at acting “normal” than their male counterparts. No, I am not being sexist. That has actually been scientifically proven.

You can be a weirdo and not Autistic. Likewise, you can be Autistic and not be a weirdo. I feel oftentimes, people who are weirdos and are arrested, like criminals, claim mental disabilities or insanity. I feel that is insulting! Not all people who have mental impairments are criminals. Take me for example. I have never done anything illegal in my life.

And I get that some people on the Spectrum are lower functioning and do not understand right from wrong. I get that, believe me. I do. But that is not really a reason to arrest them or lock them up for the rest of their lives. I have read of Autistic people asking strangers (women) if they can see their belly buttons. Curiosity is a blessing and a curse. I sometimes wonder inappropriate things, but do I act on them? Not really, no. I think weird, random thoughts.

It isn’t exactly “wrong” to sometimes occasionally think weird, maybe inappropriate thoughts about people. Hell, we are all human and have urges and curiosity. BUT…how inappropriate would it be if I went up to a girl I think is pretty and ask “Do you shave?” or “What kind of belly button do you have?” Probably very. Again…I know better but am curious. HOWEVER some people who are lower functioning might not have that filter.

Am I saying if you do something illegal and you are on the Spectrum or disabled you are immune from legal trouble? Not at all. BUT am I saying “Lock them up forever”? Not exactly. I think it depends on the severity. A slap on the wrist might suffice.

In closing, weirdos are not always on the Spectrum. And people on the Spectrum are just…well…different. Different but not less. Treat them as you yourself would want to be treated if you were in the same situation. Autistic Lives Matter and bye bye!
